MIKE ON A BIKE
"MIKE ON A BIKE", the story of Mike Rayner's 37 year bicycle tour of the South East helping churches with renovation and repair projects for $1.00 per day per room and board [in 1959] to $10.00 per day plus room and board [in 1997]. Most often, he boarded in Sunday School rooms or with church families, just staying in motels between churches and sometimes covering 60 miles in one day on his bike. He started this itinerant lifestyle after accepting Christ at age 18 and deciding to "present his body as a living sacrifice" as Romans 12:1-2 advises. At age 55, he decided to settle in LaGrange at the prompting and assistance of his pastor. He finished his G.E.D., procured a driver's license and a Social Security card and began working at a local industry, earning in a month what he was accustomed to earning in a year. He later started his own construction business, "MORE THAN JUST A CARPENTER".
He soon began spending several hours on Thursday evenings at Troup Co. jail having church for the inmates...a continuation of a ministry started many years before in one of the churches he helped renovate in Americus, Ga. Another opportunity to serve as a prison minister came in 2003 with the chaplaincy of the Coweta Co. Correctional Institute every other Sunday afternoon.
Mike also taught Sunday School, mentored at Hope Academy, and taught a children's class at the Turn Around Christian Center once a week. He passed away suddenly on 2-10-09 but his story lives on in his book, "MIKE ON A BIKE" and may be purchased for $15 at the Rosemont Baptist Church book store or from Beverly Rayner at: beverlyrayner04@hotmail.com or by calling her at 706 333-6788.
